Haunting the Deep (How to Hang a Witch #2)
Written by Adriana Mather
About from Goodreads.com
The Titanic meets the delicious horror of Ransom Riggs and the sass of Mean Girls in this follow-up to the #1 New York Times bestseller How to Hang a Witch, in which a contemporary teen finds herself a passenger on the famous “ship of dreams”—a story made all the more fascinating because the author’s relatives survived the doomed voyage.
Samantha Mather knew her family’s connection to the infamous Salem Witch Trials might pose obstacles to an active social life. But having survived one curse, she never thought she’d find herself at the center of a new one.
This time, Sam is having recurring dreams about the Titanic . . . where she’s been walking the deck with first-class passengers, like her aunt and uncle. Meanwhile, in Sam’s waking life, strange missives from the Titanic have been finding their way to her, along with haunting visions of people who went down with the ship.
Ultimately, Sam and the Descendants must unravel who is behind the spell that is drawing her ever further into the dream ship . . . and closer to sharing the same grim fate as its ghostly passengers.
Pros
A character is back that I didn't expect to be back in this book
learning about the house Sam lives in, sounds extraordinary
Location detail
The ending was a beautiful way to end a series
Cons
Figured out who the bad guy was super early in the book
Quotes I love
“It was nice having them over, though, wasn’t it? You've finally met a group of people who avoid brightly colored clothing the way you do. I better not take you girls anywhere at night. I might lose you.”-Sam’s dad
“It's a real shame, I'm going to have to eat these fancy eclairs by myself. We’ll just tell Mary that you didn’t want them.” -Sam’s dad
“Leave it to you to become a witch cliche in less than a week.” - Alice
Review
Warning might be some spoilers.
Mather did it again and wrote an amazing book, filled with intrigue and mystery. Just like the first book ‘How to Hang a Witch’ I couldn’t put it down, which can make working hard to do, which isn't a bad thing. For me, books are a way to escape reality even if it is just for a little bit. This book series did that for me, especially when at this time I was dealing with mental health and physical health issues (Which is a big reason that it took me five days to get around to writing this review)
Now let us get onto the actual review.
I enjoyed everything about this book. Some of the things and moments I enjoyed were that Elijah was back in this book, after how the first book ended I was expecting him not to be coming back in this book and thank goodness I was wrong. He was one of my favorite characters in the last book so having him come back made me super happy. The next two things I loved are kind of tied together, with them being the house the MC Sam lives in and all of the detail that is added to each locale because there is so much detail on the locations that it makes it extremely simple to picture the story taking place in them. The last main reason I loved this book was that the ending was so satisfying. With how the book ended it was super clean and everything was tied up like it was a pretty present but, it could also have another book happen afterward if Mather decided that they wanted to.
The only thing in this book that I could find an issue with was that I figured out who was the book's villain very early into the book, which doesn't bother me because of how much I enjoyed reading it.
I give this book 5 out of 5 because this is one of those books I will be picking up again and since I got it from the local library, I will be more than likely be picking up a digital copy.
5/5 ⭐️
