Under One Roof (The STEMinist Novella #1)

Written by Ali Hazelwood

About from Goodreads.com

A scientist should never cohabitate with her annoyingly hot nemesis – it leads to combustion.

Mara, Sadie, and Hannah are friends first, scientists always. Though their fields of study might take them to different corners of the world, they can all agree on this universal truth: when it comes to love and science, opposites attract and rivals make you burn….

As an environmental engineer, Mara knows all about the delicate nature of ecosystems. They require balance. And leaving the thermostat alone. And not stealing someone else’s food. And other rules Liam, her detestable big-oil lawyer of a roommate, knows nothing about. Okay, sure, technically she’s the interloper. Liam was already entrenched in his aunt’s house like some glowering grumpy giant when Mara moved in, with his big muscles and kissable mouth just sitting there on the couch tempting respectable scientists to the dark side…but Helena was her mentor and Mara’s not about to move out and give up her inheritance without a fight.

The problem is, living with someone means getting to know them. And the more Mara finds out about Liam, the harder it is to loathe him…and the easier it is to love him.

Review

Warning might be some spoilers. If you don’t want spoilers please skip down to the Enjoyed section of the review.

Before I get into the review I have a question. WTF is a “Heart-Hiccup”?

In the beginning of this book, I found it sorta boring and It really pissed me off that the MC Mara was a environmental engineer but she was absolutely horrible when it came to actually coming across that she cared about the environment with some of the things she did like left the porch light on, used the dishwasher instead of hand washing the very few dishes there where. Which would save so much more water. She would do stuff like this then turn around and be mad at Liam because he had the AC on but during winter she would turn the heat up instead of putting a sweater on and cover up in blankets or use a small space heater which would have used less energy since there are eco friendly ones. I think this bothered me so was because I try to be very eco conscious myself.

Another thing that really bothered me was that Mara would comment on his height all the time like we get it he’s super tall. It came across that his looks was the only thing that Mara liked which really sucks for Liam because I found him to be a cool character. He is super loyal, sweet, and considerate as well as being funny.

Even though at times Mara bugged th shit out of me. I really liked the story line and I thought Mara and Liam were a cute couple. I also liked that each of them were willing to try things the other person liked. Like Liam was willing to watch the bachelor and bachelorette with Mara, which he actually ended up liking and they both would yell at the screen (look at quote 2 for an example). Mara was will to try out playing video games, even though she was absolutely horrible at them.

I give this book a 3 out of 5 because I did enjoy the story, I loved Liam’s character. I just had a hard time getting into it because of Mara not being so eco conscious as you would think an environmental engineer would be.

Enjoyed

  • Liam seemed really chill, I personally enjoyed his character

  • What the story was about

  • They make a cute couple

Disliked

  • For an environmental engineer she doesn’t seem to actually care about the environment, which pissed me off a lot

  • Mara is a hypocrite and she acts all high and mighty when it comes to “caring” about the environment

  • How much Mara would go on about Liam’s height

Quotes I love

  • “Shh, be quiet. My squatting ginger roommate will key my record player if we’re too loud”. -Liam, Chapter 5

  • One hour later, when Sheryl says, “I think our relationship has come a long way, but I am not convinced that it could develop any further . . .” I slam my hand on my armrest and yell, “Oh, come on, Sheryl,” just as Liam slaps his armrest and yells, “Sheryl. What the hell?”- Chapter 5

  • “Honestly, your boss is a shit nugget and he doesn’t deserve you and you should quit and leave him to stir in his shit broth!” -Mara, Chapter 7

  • Negativity is for old farts like me.- chapter 12
