The Paris Apartment
Written by Lucy Foley
About from Goodreads.com
Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less-than-ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better in Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.
The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother’s situation, and the more questions she has. Ben’s neighbors are an eclectic bunch, and not particularly friendly. Jess may have come to Paris to escape her past, but it’s starting to look like it’s Ben’s future that’s in question.
The socialite – The nice guy – The alcoholic – The girl on the verge – The concierge
Everyone’s a neighbor. Everyone’s a suspect. And everyone knows something they’re not telling.
Review
I had high expectations for this book Which made me so upset when it didn't fulfill them because the info on this book made it sound like it was going to be amazing and it had the potential to be amazing. This book just really missed the mark for me. I ended up loathing this book so much that I ended up putting the book down at 30 percent. I didn't find any redeeming qualities.
For starters, the main character Jess is horrible. Within the first few chapters, she breaks into her brother's apartment and then proceeds to steal his cigarettes and money from his wallet. She seemed like she didn't care that her brother was missing even after she commented that it was weird that he left his wallet and keys (I don't know a single adult that would leave the house without their wallet or keys.) and who cares if his apartment smells like bleach and his cat has blood on it. This was her entire character, just her not giving a shit and being self-centered. Not one likable quality and for me if the main character is shit that is the quickest way to make me put a book down. It doesn’t matter if the writing style is good or the story is interesting, it comes down to who the main character is.
Lastly, I usually love the changing character POV but, in this book, it was poorly done because of how all the characters were boring which made all of the POVs feel the same and it got to the point I didn’t know who was who because of it.
Even though I couldn’t get through this book and I loathe this book I will probably try another one of Foley’s books. To give her writing a second chance.
