From Blood and Ash (Blood and Ash #1)

Written by Jennifer L. Armentrout

About from Goodreads.com

A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

Review

I am in love with this book. It is hard to even express my love for this book because of how much love I have for this book.  I don't have a single issue with this book. I was in love with absolutely everything. Here are some of the things I enjoyed.

The first thing I enjoyed was how dynamic the characters are. Poppy’s character is so dynamic that it feels as if you are actually her but, that is also caused by the amazing way Armentrout writes. Another thing that is caused by the dynamics of the characters was that I got my very first book crush. I have been reading romances since I was in 6th grade, so since 2007 and I have never had a book crush till now which should say a lot.

Another thing I enjoyed was how Armentrout used the book and series name actually in the story which is one of my favorite things to see in media because it means the writer took the time and thought about what the book or series should be called instead of just choosing something.

Lastly, I love how Armentrout ended the first book on a cliffhanger which led me to pick up the next book right away.

I ended up giving this book 6 out of 5 because I will be purchasing the entire series in book form, so I will have it both digitally and hardcover.

Quotes I love

  • From Blood and Ash, We Shall Rise.

  • Death is like an old friend who pays a visit, sometimes when it’s least expected and other times when you’re waiting for her.

  • My hands curled into fists. Rylan. His name is Rylan. Not Rylan.

  • “So a good old rebellion may liven things up for you? Dead men and women and children are a source of entertainment?”- Poppy
