Review

I enjoyed this story; it was just not one of those books that I could binge in one sitting. In the beginning of the book it actually showed the rations an adult would get each week. One thing that I haven’t seen in a long time is when each chapter is about a different woman.  Ryan also put recipes throughout the book. One thing I did enjoy about this book is how descriptive Ryan’s writing is; it was as if I was there myself. One thing I didn’t like was how Gwendoline’s husband was. I felt as if he had no redeeming  qualities; I am one of those people that love to hate a character, but this character was just irritating.

I am giving this book, a three out of 5 stars because I did enjoy the book, but I could NOT stand Sir Strickland one bit. I do recommend to anyone who enjoys books that take place during WWII and if they enjoy learning about the food rations that took place.

Enjoyed

  • Ryan added recipes that used items that would have been rationed or that you could forage.

  • How descriptive the book is.

  • How each chapter is about a different woman.

Disliked

  • I absolutely despise Sir Strickland as he has no good qualities.

Quotes I love

-“Sometimes she says that she hears him, if she listens hard enough, that he is there, everywhere she looks, in the hills where they walked, in the fruit of the trees that he planted, and in the olives from the soil that he dug.”= page 213
